Leo’s Story

In a pre-pandemic world, Leo would have been immediately adopted. In fact, Leo was originally adopted from another shelter. His owner was overwhelmed by Leo’s size and his energy, therefore he was surrendered to our shelter. No dog wants to end up at a shelter, let alone end up at a shelter TWICE.

Leo is a three year old Border Collie Mix, with the cutest ears and happiest smile. He has a playful, active energy, but nothing that is not indicative of a young working breed dog. Post-pandemic, nationally, shelters are struggling with a decrease in adoptions and an increase of length of stay. Animals at shelters, unfortunately are facing the ramifications. Longer length of stay leads to stressed induced behaviors.

Leo was passed by potential adopters day after day, most of the time, not even getting a chance to show off how amazing he truly was. Leo was great with every staff member and volunteer he met, even kids! Leo knew sit, down, stay and heel, and would eagerly demonstrate those commands for a treat. Playing fetch was his favorite hobby. Not to mention, Leo was housebroken! All of that being said, Leo sat at the shelter for three months hoping every day would be his day.

That day finally came on November 25th, 2023! Leo’s people came to the shelter looking for a new four legged friend and that’s exactly what they got! This is a great story for those who may not be sure of a dog because of behaviors/barking that may be showing while they are in their cage. Take them out. Give them a chance to show you what love and loyalty they are capable of giving!
