Shamus’s Story

Shamus was a young but huge Great Dane Mix that was friendly and outgoing when he came to us. Staff had “pulled” Shamus from the Lorain County Dog Kennel, after he was found as a stray. We soon noticed that something was wrong. He would whine and cry and tire quickly on walks. Turns out he had growing pains, a condition that can be very debilitating, especially for extra-large dogs. Shamus needed months of treatment and pain management while he grew into his body. Shamus has a wonderful family who adores him and they wanted to share the below update!:

“Shamus now known as Chubb has been such an amazing addition to our very active life. We adopted Shamus on September 4, 2022. We quickly decided to change his name to Chubb after Nick Chubb from the Cleveland Browns. That day it was explained to us that he might have a long road ahead of him. He had multiple medicines that came with him plus pain management medicine as needed. He was VERY itchy and uncomfortable in almost everything he did. We got him antibiotics and our vet told us he may just be an “allergy kid” and to just try to manage things when he’s uncomfortable. We read about different skin allergies and through the combination of diet and bath shampoos he has come a long way. Chubb has put on a good amount of weight and now weighs in at 95 lbs. He doesn’t think he’s a big dog. Chubb now has a sister, another dog we adopted from Friendship Animal Protective League. They love each other so much. They cuddle together on their hammock and have WWE matches in the living room. Chubb’s other favorite things are large chewing ropes, KONG’s with peanut butter, and most of all belly rubs. He does snore really loudly but we still love him anyway!”

Our supporters and their donations are the reason we are able to help dogs like Shamus. Dogs that need extensive treatment and medication come through our doors every day. Donations you make, especially ones that are matched, can go TWICE as far in providing this care and treatment! Shamus is now living his best life and that is thanks to you!
