National Walk Your Dog Week in October

Did you know that there is a week dedicated to walking your dog in October? October 1st through October 7th is National Walk your Dog Week, but this article will talk about why it is important to incorporate walking your dog into your schedule several times a week for the entire year! You’ll learn that not only are there several health benefits for your dog, but there are also several health benefits for you, their owners as well. At the end of the article you will find several pet friendly parks in Northeast Ohio!

Health Benefits for Your Dog

In general, walking your dog is good for your dog’s physical health. Walking your dogs helps them maintain a healthy weight, which in turn prevents any obesity-related health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. By walking daily, your dog will also strengthen their muscles and joints.

Aside from physical health, dog walking can also improve your dog’s mental health. Walking your dog provides enrichment and stimulation for their minds which can reduce stress. Dogs get the opportunity to discover new sights, sounds and smells when on walks which also helps with socialization. A lot of behavioral problems pet owners see in their dogs such as destructiveness is due to pent up energy and boredom. Daily walks can reduce this pent up energy and boredom which can lead to a decrease in behavioral issues at home.

Health Benefits for You

Walking your dog is also super beneficial to your own physical health. Just like with dogs, walking can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle by burning calories, maintaining your weight and reducing your overall stress levels. It is also good for our own mental wellbeing as well. Studies have found that regular exercise such as simply walking can help you sleep better at night.

There are always several ways that walking your dog can bring you close to your community. It gives you an opportunity to explore local pet friendly parks, neighborhoods and places of business. Additionally, it is a great excuse to meet new people and fellow pet parents.
